This Wednesday, WordPress 7.0 ships on 20 May 2026. It’s the biggest release in years. And it does something most people are sleeping on. WordPress
It puts AI inside the platform itself.
Not as a chatbot. Not as a content generator plugin. As infrastructure.
What’s actually shipping
Three things, working together:
- A new Settings → Connectors screen where you plug in API keys for Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini once, site-wide
- The WP AI Client, a shared layer every plugin can use so they’re not all reinventing their own AI integration
- The Abilities API, which lets your site declare what it can do in a way AI agents can read
There’s also an official MCP adapter so external AI agents like Claude or ChatGPT can connect straight to your site, see what it can do, and take action. Gutenberg Times
That last bit is the one to pay attention to.
Why AX is now different
For the last 18 months, AX has been about being read.
Schema markup. LLM.txt. Clean entity data. Structured content. All so AI could find you, parse you, cite you when someone asked it a question.
That was AX 1.0. Passive. Read-only.
WordPress 7 flips it. Now AI agents can connect directly to your site and do things. Pull recent posts. Update product attributes. Generate variants. Push content live. Query data. Workflows that used to need custom scripting now run on natural language. WordPress.com
Your site is no longer just content for AI to read. It’s a workspace AI can operate inside.
What this means for your business
A few things shift:
- Your CMS becomes an agent surface. The cleaner your data structure, the more an AI can actually do for you and your team
- The Abilities API is the new SEO. What capabilities you expose, and how clearly you describe them, decides what AI can help with
- Plugins start sharing one set of credentials instead of each storing their own. Less mess, lower costs, fewer auth headaches
- The bar for “AI-ready” stops being a chatbot in the corner. It becomes whether your site is structured enough for an agent to use
If your content marketing strategy is “rank in Google”, you’re already a release behind. The conversation is now about whether an agent can do a job inside your stack on behalf of a customer, a team member, or you.
What to do this week
- Check your PHP version. 7.4 minimum, 8.3 recommended
- Test on staging first. Page builders, SEO plugins and WooCommerce extensions are where things break
- Audit which of your existing AI plugins are compatible. AI Engine, Rank Math and Jetpack AI are early movers
- Start thinking about what abilities your site should expose. Not all of them. The ones that actually drive your business
- If you run a content team, this is the moment to look at your workflow and ask which steps an agent should be doing, not your editor
WordPress just turned every site running it into a potential AI workspace. The agencies and operators who move first will pull ahead fast.
AX is no longer about being found. It’s about being useful.
