For two decades, the digital commerce playbook has been UX and CX. User Experience makes the site usable. Customer Experience makes the brand likeable. Both still matter. Neither is enough anymore.
There’s now a third layer most brands are ignoring: AX. AI Experience.
AX is how your brand is experienced by AI systems. Not by humans browsing pixels, but by the language models, agents and assistants increasingly standing between your customer and your store. UX is for humans navigating screens. CX is how humans feel about your brand. AX is how a machine reads your brand and decides whether to recommend it.
The pillars:
- Structured data for products, prices, attributes and policies
- Schema.org markup, properly nested and validated
- LLM.txt to declare what your site offers
- Markdown content LLMs can parse cleanly
- API accessibility for real-time stock and pricing
- Entity recognition so your brand is a known node in LLM knowledge graphs
These run alongside UX and CX, not instead of them.
Why this matters now
- AI referral traffic to US retail sites was up roughly 393% year on year in Q1 2026 (Adobe)
- AI-referred shoppers convert 31% higher and generate 254% more revenue per visit
- Google AI Mode and Gemini already do in-conversation checkout via UCP
- ChatGPT does in-chat checkout via Stripe’s ACP
The protocol layer
Two protocols matter right now:
- UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol): Google and Shopify, endorsed by 20+ partners. Powers Google AI Mode and Gemini
- ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol): Stripe and OpenAI. Powers ChatGPT
Both often run on MCP (Model Context Protocol) underneath. Realistic position: support both.
Implementation by platform
Shopify
Shopify did the most work. UCP was co-developed with Google.
Go to Settings > Sales channels > Agentic Storefronts. Enable, confirm catalog eligibility, configure surfaces, publish. UCP-compliant MCP server, embedded checkout, Shop Pay and existing PSPs all included. Currently US-first rollout with AU following. Subscriptions and bundles aren’t supported in agentic checkout yet.
For most Shopify merchants, this is the highest-leverage AX move available.
BigCommerce
BigCommerce’s parent company Commerce (CMRC) formally endorsed UCP in January 2026 and integrated Stripe ACP via the Agentic Commerce Suite.
Connect Stripe, enable ACP, run your catalog through Feedonomics for schema alignment, register with Google Merchant Centre as UCP-eligible. The Feedonomics layer (Commerce-owned) is a genuine advantage for feed quality.
Less native than Shopify, but the protocol support is real and rolling out at pace.
Magento (Adobe Commerce)
Adobe shipped the Commerce MCP server at Summit 2026 (April). Gives agents secure, real-time access to catalog, cart, pricing, inventory, promotions, checkout and orders. Add Adobe LLM Optimizer for AI discoverability and Brand Concierge for on-site conversational shopping. UCP and ACP support is staged.
For Magento Open Source, you build it yourself. Magenable’s open-source MCP and the Agento project are the leading community options on GitHub. Or build a custom MCP server on Magento’s REST and GraphQL APIs.
Adobe Commerce now has the strongest enterprise MCP story. Open Source is doable but development-heavy.
WooCommerce
Most control, most work.
WooCommerce 10.3 shipped a native MCP server on the WordPress Abilities API. Stripe ACP integration is in progress. UCP support is community-led for now (UCP Adapter for WooCommerce is the leading plugin).
The path: upgrade to 10.3, audit product data (variable products are the biggest pain), stand up a dedicated UCP endpoint behind aggressive edge caching, map data to UCP schemas, implement OAuth 2.0 for Identity Linking, wire up AP2 payment handlers, enable real-time inventory webhooks, register with Google Merchant Centre.
Sub-200ms TTFB is non-negotiable. Agents make multiple sequential calls and won’t wait.
What to do this quarter
Three actions, regardless of platform:
- Audit your AX baseline. Run your top 50 products through ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Note which appear as product cards, brand mentions, or not at all
- Fix product data quality. Structured attributes, clean taxonomy, real-time inventory, schema.org markup. Highest-leverage fix on every platform
- Pick your protocol position. Most brands should support both UCP and ACP. UCP unlocks Google’s AI surfaces, ACP unlocks ChatGPT
Then layer on the platform-specific work.
The shift
The brands that win in agentic commerce aren’t the ones with the prettiest websites. They’re the ones whose data is cleanest, whose entities are most recognisable, and whose protocol surface is widest.
UX is still required. CX is still required. AX is required too.
